Whenever I’m on vacation, I always try to scope out a local independent bookshop. During my family’s week-long trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I was happy to drag them to Corolla’s Island Bookstore! Island Bookstore has three locations across the Outer Banks, in Corolla, Duck, and Kitty Hawk, but I was most interested in the Corolla location, which resides in the town’s quaint, historic village, just steps down a gravel path to the Currituck Lighthouse.
The shop itself had two stories, the first featuring adult fiction and children’s books from newborn to young adult, with hardly any room to move comfortably, but the second story was much more spacious, with armchairs for guests to flip through their selections before making a purchase. Island Bookstore carried a small selection across a wide variety of genres, from fiction and self-help to history and mystery and beyond. It’s not a store you’d go to searching for a small, bizarre title, but definitely one where you can find local gems and the latest bestsellers.
After browsing for a short time in the shop’s cramped corners, I walked away with Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and a Murakami tote bag (which was a pre-order exclusive for Killing Commendatore, and I was quite bummed when I couldn’t get my hands on it, so I was really happy to come across it during my venture to Island Bookstore). My trip to Corolla’s Island Bookstore was definitely one of the highlights of my OBX vacation!
